Large pipe wrapped at the base with a black fabric carbon fiber composite repair

Composite Pipe Repair

Industry: Water & Wastewater

Solution: Water Treatment and Condensate Piping

ID: CPR-7-00172

Project summary:

A pipe transporting rainwater in the basement of a water treatment plant developed a through-wall failure large enough that when it rained, in the words of an employee at the plant, “it was like a waterfall was coming down in the basement.” The pipe ran along the ceiling of the basement between two walls and was held in place by pipe supports. Needing a quick solution that could repair the through-wall failure and wouldn’t require the pipe segment to be replaced or the concrete walls to be torn down, the plant opted for a six-layer carbon fiber composite system that could be installed over the repair area and accommodate the existing pipe supports. Six months after the repair, the employee stated they were very pleased and had no additional incidents.
