Composite Pipe Repair
Industry: Water & Wastewater
Solution: Water Treatment and Condensate Piping
ID: CPR-7-00169
Project summary:
During inspections, a water treatment plant operator found that a pipe that passed through a concrete floor had a hole in it approximately the size of a pencil. As this would have been a difficult and costly pipe section to replace due to the complex geometry, the plant operator required a solution that would repair the existing pipe and tie into the concrete floor. After sand blasting the pipe and applying putty to smooth the repair area, a six-layer carbon fiber composite system was wrapped over the existing pipe segment, creating a structurally independent pipe. A t-miter was then created by grinding the concrete on the floor and installing overlapping carbon fiber pieces to seal the joint between the pipe and the concrete floor. The entire repair area was then coated with an epoxy topcoat.
